I've not had too much luck with direct usb/umass use. Gphoto2 is a fine way
to go in theory, but personally, I prefer using a pcmcia adapter for either
smartmedia or CF. I've tried a few of the $20 USB multiformat usb readers,
but have found some of them to be quirky.

Currently, I use a eos 10D for product shots with a 1 GB 32X lexar CF
card. It came with a adapter usb labeled "jumpshot" which works flawlessly
on i386-current.
