I believe the culprit here is perl 5.8. On the several systems I've 
tried, that seems to be the common factor in failure, and success.

So, the dependency of p5-gtk on perl>=5.0 seems incorrect, yes?

(It never fails that the _one_ thing I am really focussed on is that
_one thing_ that gets hosed by perl 5.8. Some sort of karmic thing, I
guess.)
