Something I have done has broken SCSI scanner operation and I am pulling out
what remains of my hair trying to get it working again.

SANE and xscanimage worked fine before but no longer work. Unfortunately I did
two things between the time that the scanner worked and the time it quit. I
upgraded from 1.6 to 1.6.1 and installed Mozilla 1.4 (which caused a cascade
of package rebuilding)

sane-find-scanner works with:

found SCSI processor "EPSON Expression636 1.12" at /dev/uk0


but scanimage fails with:

[epson] Error opening the devicescanimage: open of device epson:/dev/uk0
failed: Invalid argument
