They're basicly just codecs, so the first step would be to figure out
how to use one as an audio card, and then you'd only have to implement
a V.90 modem, from scratch, in software. I believe there are also
license issues, if you refer to the V.90 standard in writing the code.
On the bright side, _real_ modems seem to be making a comeback. I saw
a Zoom USB external for about $50 in Best Buy the other day.
