I think this is your clue to your troubles.  You just may be 
encountering the infamous Path MTU Discovery (PMTUD) problem.  (Does 
mail.netbsd.org do PMTUD?)  Do you have this in your sysctl.conf:
net.inet.tcp.mss_ifmtu=1
