The FreeBSD Handbook has a good explanation of NIS/YP. FreeBSD's
implementation is a bit different from NetBSD, but if you read
that section of the handbook and the NetBSD man pages for 'ypbind',
'ypserv', 'ypinit', and so on, you should be able to figure it out.

However, shouldn't use either your method or NIS unless you are
quite certain you can trust your network, on unless you are using
IPSEC to secure traffic between your systems. Both NFS and NIS/YP
are vulnerable to passive and active network attacks. Using either
to distribute sensitive information - like passwords - on a un-trusted
network is just asking for trouble.
