This kind of problem is very timing sensitive. The extra delay/buffering
caused by going through the router is often enouth to mitigate the effect
of the problem.

These cards are half-duplex only.

Maybe the cable modem expect full-duplex ? This would be surprising though.
Does netstat -i show lots of collisions or errors on ep0 ?
