I recently saw ``Heretic 2'' for cheap at a local store. At $2, I figured
that I couldn't really miss (especially since I recalled that the demo
played in the past).
When I installed it, I was reminded whey I had uninstalled the demo:
Under 1.6 and/or XFree86 4.x, the silly thing is almost unplayable.
It worked beautifully under 1.5.x.
The "normal" effect under XFree86 4.x and NetBSD 1.6 is to effectively
freeze the game while you hold a mouse button and drag the mouse (at
least if you drag left or right).
The real game, at least, has a second alternative for the mouse mode.
In the alternate form, the game completely botches the mouse events.
(Probably thinks that it's talking directly to a GNU/LINUX driver, but
instead is talking to wsmouse and didn't bother to check if it knew the
protocol being used).
Any ideas about using this, other than digging out XFree86 3.x and/or
NetBSD 1.5.x?
It's not a big deal, and is only a $2 game from a company (Loki) that
is no longer in business I gather. Still... Would be nice to be able
to play it, and I don't consider mouseless play an option. (^&
(I guess that one thing I have not tried is plugging in a PS/2 mouse
and telling XFree86 to talk to the PS/2 port instead. I wonder if that
would let the "direct to mouse" protocol bit work correctly?)
