I am unable to run backups under 1.6.1 RC2 using a tape drive that 
worked the last time I used it a couple months ago. I even tried a 
generic kernel and got the same result.

Is sd0 faulty or the scsi controller or the tape drive? I suspect sd0 is 
 the culprit in part because it's a refurbished drive.
