i experienced slightly different problem but it's connected to the 
install, so i'll also post it...

when doing install from the ftp, the installer DOESN'T recognize whether 
ftp fetched complete files. i think it just doesn't read the return code 
from ftp (if it returns something). when pax tries then to unpack these 
non-complete files it coredumps... installation from cdrom was ok... the 
sysinst script should probably be modified, if it is possible...
