But any corruption is trivially fixable - with your standard editor.
The most likely corruption (as opposed to something that leaves
you with an empty file) is a partial message that ends in a partial
line. Even that only causes two messages to run into each other.
Ok it does take a while for (eg mutt) to parse a file containing
20000+ messages. But a directory with 20000+ files is probably
worse.
It is certainly handy to be able to use standard tools to search
mailboxes.
