Anytime you see something like that, it's a reference to a man page. 
Someone might say, "use file(1) to see the file type", meaning simply that
there's a "file" command that comes with the system and it's documented in
Section 1 of the manual.  See intro(1) and man(1) for more.  

If you type "man ex", you'll get ex(1), which is an ancient and truly
venerable editor I'd never recommend to anyone.  To see the documentation
for the "ex" driver (in section 4, with all the others), type "man 4 ex". 
That's what I was pointing you to.  

But I think when you turn of PNP, your network hardware will come to life.
 I'm no expert, but it's peculiar to me that the built-in sound lives on
the ISA bus.  That's one mother of a motherboard you've got there.
