This is puzzling me:

I've done a fresh install of 1.5.2. I set up defaultrouter, hostname, and configured (one of my 4) NIC. Nothing else -- standard install without X11. But when I try to
    ping 127.0.0.1
nothing happens. I hope someone can point out to me, what I'm doing wrong.
