What is the difference between the different /dev/fd0x devices?

And how does the etc/floppytab file (does not have a man-page) change
the way floppy disks are used?

The reason I ask, is that I want to use some floppies that don't use
the standard ms-dos track/sector layout. I would need to define this
myself, but I don't know where to find the necessary information about
this.
