I think that the cable modems don't have mac addresses. They start up in
``bitch mode'' (Term coined by Andrew Brown who first determined their
behavior - he can explain more), which means that they listen on their
LAN side for the first mac address, and they advertise that mac address
on the WAN side.

| mac addresses for my PC's NIC and for the NIC in the cablemodem.
