qpopper offers a "server mode" that disables the use of the temp file.
(They used to advice against using it if you have users that log in and
access mail locally though.)

(I maintain vm-pop3d; some use it with APOP and I have heard that some
have used stunnel or other SSL wrappers with it.)

By the way, does anyone know why there are popper files under
/usr/src/crypto/dist/{heimdal,krb4} ?
