BSD being more secure and stable is kind of a
generalization, but most of the time true. Depends on
what you are trying to do with the machine for the
most part. 

The major benefit to any of the BSD's is the
development model. It's very democratic (well, for the
most part anyway), so you get what feels very much
like a "commercial" distribution. They ship an OS, and
there's never any question what you're running. No Red
Hat this with a custom kernel that. It's NetBSD 1.5.2.
Which is why it's difficult for me to understand where
there's not more commercial software for these OS's.
There's no headaches!
