Just a followup to anyone else who does this: I finally recovered by
"updating" my -current/hybrid install to 1.5.2 (from my original install
CD). Then I just renamed /etc.old to /etc to recover my old settings,
re-supped the 1.5.3 source, then I was able to build a 1.5.3-RC2 kernel that
works. Now I just have to figure out if I need to rebuild userland again
(probably). Ah well, it was educational, in a
oh-no-not-another-learning-experience kind of way...

Cheers!
