hmm, this would be a lot easier if I knew what exactly was being 
looked for. I have grepped around in the distribution and can't 
make any sense of the abstracted variable names: I'd really like 
to see something like

QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
[ if -d ${QTDIR} ]  . . . .

then I would know where I was.
