I snagged a HP 500x on eBay recently that works fine for me. I had mixed
success with an Axis server some time back. (The problem was configuration
from some Wind-Owes boxes; never tried it with NetBSD, but I need something
that works smoothly for Wind-Owes, too....)

My motivations were the same (printer and old h/w aggravations). I also
wanted to fiddle w/ CUPS and ipp. I'm now using two non-PS printers via
CUPS and the socket://server:910x mechanism with no problems.

I have the 500x on the same lan segment as my 802.11b bridge, so 802.11
support on the print server was not a requirment.
