Not really, the 'working fifo' test is just checking that
some particular register bits can be set.  I think a
piece of DRAM will pass that test.

IMHO the uart grope should at least check that it can
read/write the baud rate register.

OTOH an isa pnp modem is likely to be a hardware one...
