The mdoc macros are actually quite high level.  IMHO comparable to the ease
of HTML, with a less intuitive syntax.

Maybe /usr/share/mdoc.template would be helpful.

"mdoc" is pretty widespread, though I don't know the official history or
standards status, but i think more systems can handle it out of the box
than sgml formatted system manuals.
