I know at least one person wanted to know my progress
on setting up a wireless network over to my friend's
house. I bought 2 Linksys WAP11's in order to do this.
They arrived last night and I set them up with little
trouble.

These little things are neat. I followed the manual
carefully to set them up in point to point mode, which
means they will only talk to each other (and
unfortunately the initial setup utility via USB
control cable only works through Windows). I thought
they should have been working right away, but I ended
up powering them down and they worked after powerup (I
think, I'm not 100% sure when they started working,
but it was sometime after the power cycle).

So from one end of my appartment to the other (maybe
50+ feet) here is the ping time to the remote wireless
device:

(speedy)[/home/andy] > ping -c 10 192.168.1.251

The only reason they talk IP is for the SNMP
configuration tool. Otherwise, they don't care about
IP. BUT, they do send back pings which is nice. You
don't have to have any device hooked up to it to ping
it, so you can run around the house plugging in the
power and try pinging it to see if it still works.

Ok, bad news. It didn't work going over to my friends
house about 100 - 120 feet away. There is a laundry
room in between, but I didn't try plugging it in there
to see if it works. Doesn't matter really. I'm going
to try the firmware hack to double the output power of
the internal amplifier from this link:

And try again.

Andy
