I think I will. There ought to be a simple way of configuring the wscons
screens given that most people are running vt100/102/220/320 emulations.

I haven't a clue how to do this. Could you elaborate?
I was thinking that if the prompt thing works, I could write a script that
tests
for which /dev/ttyE# is active and create a corresponding screen
font/size/color/etc.
