I'll second on the C3040. I have a 3030 (3040 has a few more pixels). For
a 'consumer' product it gives good quality images.

I've evaluated several at several levels.

Consumer: Olymous C3040 (Excellent). Would recommend to all.

Consumer: Minolta Dimage-7 (Problematic, couldabeengreat...)
(The Dimage uses a 'video' like view finder which 1) is not sharp, hence
manual
focus is lousy. The autofocus is slow, and consumes batters like mad...
but it
does have a large pixel capacity...)

Mid: Fuji S1 (OK but Fuji uses the Nikon 8008 'frame' about 10 years old
and
so the focus is slow and has problems in 'wyrd' lighting conditions. In
addition
the exposure metering is also finicky.

(Note: The Nikons use IEEE-1394 not USB)

High: Nikon D1 (last years model...) Good, uses F5 body, hence has the
autofocus
and metering features that the high end F5 has. Problem is a 'cyan' cast
which
is difficult to correct for.

High: Nikon D1X (current D1...) Excelent... but at US $5-6,000 is a bit
expensive. Seems
to correct for some of the problems the D1 had. There is a more 'sports'
oriented version
but since my main thing is wedding photography the D1X seems to be the
model I
would choose.

These evals were over periods of months, and usage in various settings
rather than
just Store demos...
