Ha, cable service. This behaves as a shared ethernet device. I guess
someone else on on the same segment as you have a machine directly connected
to the cable modem with 192.168.1.2 (this is a common used IP :)
Either this is an error, but it may be intentionnal too:
some peoples connect a hub to the cable modem, and connect all of their
machines on it. One of the machines act as a NAT/router using only
one network interface and IP aliases. This avoid buying a second NIC ...
