Might be some weird routing issue but it just smells like DNS to me.  Are
you pinging by name or number?  Have you tried adding entries to /etc/hosts
to guarantee lookup both ways?  Remember, you don't always see the problem
looking up the remote siste.  Sometimes the problem is the server doing
a reverse lookup on you.  Telnet does this but ping doesn't.
