More info....

...I tried it like this...

# nmbd -d 8 -D

...then paged down through the log to find this...

[2001...] param/loadparm.c:lp_servicenumber(2819)
  lp-servicenumber: couldn't find homes
[2001...]nmbd/nmbd.c:reload_services(289)
  services not loaded

...but it occurs many lines before I see this...

[2001...] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(788)
  Becoming a daemon.
[2001...] lib/util.c:fcntl_lock(2672)
  fcntl_lock 4 8 0 1 3
[2001...] lib/util.c:fcntl_lock(2673)
  Lock call successful
[2001...] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(806)
  Opening sockets 137
[2001...] lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(824)
  Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host
[2001...] lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(824)
  Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host

...Is that informative?
