I've had such a fun time playing with netbsd as a server, that I decided
to install it on my laptop the other day. Everything works great aside
from the audio... the machine is a toshiba satellite pro 460cdt, pertinent
information is as follows:
$ uname -a
NetBSD matilda 1.5.1 NetBSD 1.5.1 (GENERIC_LAPTOP) #33: Mon Jul 2
15:56:09 CEST 2001
he@nsa.uninett.no:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC_LAPTOP i386
$ dmesg|egrep "(sb0|audio)"|grep -v usb
sb0 at isa0 port 0x220-0x237 irq 5 drq 1: dsp v3.01
audio0 at sb0: half duplex, mmap, independent
midi0 at sb0: SB MIDI UART
opl0 at sb0: model OPL3no:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC_LAPTOP i386
$ audioctl -a
name=SoundBlaster
version=3.01
config=SB_Pro
lrwx------ 1 root wheel 6 Jul 22 18:31 /dev/audio -> audio0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 42, 128 Jul 22 19:46 /dev/audio0
lrwx------ 1 root wheel 6 Jul 22 18:31 /dev/sound -> sound0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 42, 0 Jul 22 19:30 /dev/sound0
I first tried to play a wav file with esdplay, audioplay, rplay, and play
from sox (all of which were built from pkgsrc), however, it simply hangs
with no output and no visible errors. I then attempted to play an mp3 with
mpg123 (with -m -2), and xmms (these were also built from pkgsrc), these
have the same result (hangs at 1 second, no output, no error)... I then
tried to simply cat a random file to /dev/audio, and again it simply
hangs... syslog does not report any abnormalities and I am at a complete
loss for what is wrong, as it seems to me that sb0 is recognized and
should be functioning properly. My only speculation was that it was a
permission issue, so I repeated all tests as root with the same results.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
