I have no reason to expect that the chip will perform badly.  I have had
very good experience with National Semiconductor Ethernet parts in the
past.

This chip also does VLAN tagging and IP/TCP/UDP checksumming, and the
interface to these functions on the chip is *very* simple.  I will definitely
work on supporting the checksum feature on the card (we can already use
the VLAN tagging feature) once I'm in "start making it faster" mode :-)
