Hello,

I am using 1.5.1_BETA and detected problems when copying large files (~230 MB)
over the network, from a 1.5 server (working fine) and the 1.5.1_BETA machine.
The md5 checksum is not the same after copying.
I've tried copying over NFS and FTP, but with both the same problem occurs.

Then I tried to split the large file into smaller chunks (~30 MB) and that
worked most time well. Then I put the chunks together with "cat", and the
resulting file had often another md5-sum (and every try another md5-sum), too,
even if the small chunks have the same md5 as on the server.

I don't really believe in a network problem because of the strange behavior
of "cat".

I first though it is because of /tmp and /var beeing LFS filesystems, but after
converting them to FFS the same problems occur.

Perhaps memory (I have 256MB)? But BIOS memory check succeeds.

Perhaps because of VMWare is installed on my computer (the network devices of that)?

Then the last programs I've compiled from pkgsrc (mozilla-0.9, dia etc.) all
resulted in a "bus error" when tried to execute/run them.

Please tell me that there's a reason for that.
Is kernel 1.5.1_BETA so unstable that those problems can occur?

Thanks in advance

Michael Neumann
