What commands are you using for the dump and restore?
Can you try tar instead? It may detect some errors that restore
won't.
Also, you could grab a big file, dd it onto the tape, and then dd it
back off again. Use md5 to see if it's the same file.
You've checked /var/log/messages for kernel error messages, right?
