Subject: best way to speed up "vi"

I've got an old but trusty machine. It's got 48MB of 70ns memory
and one of the early 60MHz pentiums. Nearly everything works fast
enough, but loading even the smallest of documents into "vi" takes
the most irritating amount of time. (A 14MB 80ns memory/486DX2
machine with similar architecture is strangely enough considerably
faster in this respect.)

I've got an old scsi board and an 80MB scsi disk that are compatible
with this machine. If I used it in addition to the present ide hdd
(dma is known to be very slow in this hardware) what should I mount
on it to get the best performance with respect to programs like "vi,"
"/tmp," "swap" or something else? Would it even make a difference?

Or should I be trying to scrounge up a "windows accelerator" card
like is in the faster 486DX2 machine? (I'm not using X, and don't
know if the NetBSD kernel is even using the card.)

Thanks for any opinions or pointers on this.
