For running quake you need data files. Look for quakesw-1.0.6.tar.gz.
Extract it somewhere, and start quake from the same directory, e.g.
by running 'quake.x11'.

Am I to pay any attention to this or is it something the
administration couldn't (for legal reasons?) get rid of?
there is a quake.x11 file I can execute but it gives me:

FindFile: can't find gfx/pop.lmp
Playing shareware version.
FindFile: can't find gfx.wad
Error: W_LoadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad
VID_Shutdown
