Edited /etc/defaults/rc.conf (you are supposed to do that, aren't 
   you?) and now I periodically get the message:

I think the paradigm is to leave /etc/defaults/* alone and change
/etc/rc.conf to override whatever is appropriate.  That way the
original reference remains intact and the site-specific changes are
obvious.
