For instructions on how to build a netbsd kernel, the best place
is the NetBSD website documentation section:
	http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/kernel/

The 3rd Edition of the UNIX System Administration Guide (by
Evi Nemeth and others) has a section on building kernels for FreeBSD
(which is similar), Red Hat Linux, Solaris and something else (HP?)
which might provide you with some general information. But I found
this book to be expensive (my only criticism of it).

If you want information on the kernel design, there is section 9 of the NetBSD
online man pages (see "man 9 intro").

I realise you are not interested in books, but there is the book
"Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD operating
system" by McKusick and others which might be heavy going for a
beginner. (I hear that the new edition of this book will be on the
FreeBSD operating system, but can't confirm this.)

There are more sources of information at:
