As a datapoint:

NetBSD 1.4.2 sparc using pkgsrc.tar.gz downloaded today (Oct 11,2000) built
xamp by simply changing to /usr/pkgsrc/audio/xamp and running make, then
make install. qt1-1.44 was compiled and installed automatically during the
xamp build.
