You shouldn't need to extract it -- you can grab binary/kernel/netbsd.INSTALL.gz,
which is the same kernel. i.e.

ftp.netbsd.org://pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.5_ALPHA2/i386/binary/kernel/netbsd.INSTALL.gz
