I don't recall what you said then - can you dig out your network
configuration, as used under linux?   I hadn't heard of a vines
implementation for linux (or anything even half sane - just wintrash)
though it is possible they have one (it isn't something I would look for).

But it is also possible that there's just something else odd going on
with your NetBSD setup, and linux is using IP.  If it is, then NetBSD
can as well.

So, if you can send your linux network setup info (what you have
configured for it, and what ifconfig and netstat give as output there)
and the NetBSD boot time messages for the ex0 device (and any relayed phy,
some ex's have them, others don't... the phy lines will appear immediately
after the ex0 lines if they're going to appear at all), and what
ifconfig ex0 reports on your NetBSD.
