what does xdpyinfo say?  do you see a line with "MIT-SHM" in the
extensions list?  also what does the ipcs command tell you?

My guess is that you do not have the SYSV IPC compiled in the kernel
_or_ you are trying to remote display the application to another X
display in which case shared memory will not work (I think)
