First, you need to have the deeper color depth setup in your XF86Config
file.  There should probably be a section (towards the end) which
specifies a color depth of "8" - you'd need to add similar sections which
have a depth of 16, 24 or 32 (depending on your card, etc...).  Check
through some sample XF86Config files - you'll see how it all fits
together.

Second, to start via the startx command, do "startx -- -bpp 16" or "startx
-- -bpp 24" - you get the idea.  If XF86Config is setup correctly, this
should start you in a deeper color depth.
