The speed setting in your options file should probably be higher - 115200
for example.  57600 (or whatever the modem manages to connect at) is the
speed of the connection without compression.  When the modem does manage to
compress the stream a fair amount (e.g. text), the speed from the modem to
your PC can go higher than 57600.
