Basically I set back settings to bios/setup default. I donīt know if the
settings of the memory subsystem had anything to do, but one thing
I changed here was to turn off "Write Cache Pipeline".

In the PCI subsystem I changed back to the default settings are:

PCI Master Read Prefetch
(when enabled the MMU will prefetch data DRAM if the PCI bus
master reads data from DRAM, default disabled)

PCI#2 Master 1 WS Read
(when enabled allows a one-wait-state TRDY# response if PCI bus
master reads data from target, default disabled)

Settings that could be changed from default settings:

PCI Delayed Transaction
PCI Dynamic Bursting
PCI Master 0 WS Write
PCI#2 Master 1 WS Write
CPU to PCI Write Buffer

all settings are enabled by default.

Be aware that AFAIK these settings (if working) should speed up
your machine and changing them could result in lower performance.

As mentioned my Mobo uses a Via MVP3 chipset, AMD K6 III CPU
and 2MB 2nd (3rd) level cache and the problem was with a 3com
card. The problem I had occured under NT that recognized the
3com card correctly and gave no error messages, the network did
not work and changing settings on the 3com card with 3coms
software resulted in somtimes working network funktions (ping etc.)
for some seconds only and system lockups.

I can only agree to that but at least they have some tech support.
Make shure to always document original settings in the case
somthing went wrong.
