Is there any way to peg the PPP unit number to its underlying serial
device? Since the IPF/NAT rules are applied to an interface specified
by unit number, I want to make sure that the rules stay with the right
interface.

    eg
        ppp0 --> /dev/ttya
        ppp1 --> /dev/ttyb

It seems that the unit number is allocated to pppd by an ioctl
(PPPIOCGUNIT), and with random disconnections and re-connections it
appears to be possible to end up with the unit numbers reversed.

  ... or am I missing something?
