Incidentally the README ought to point to
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.4/patches/patch-00-lfs.gz
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.4/patches/patch-01-in_var.gz
rather than
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.4/source/patches/patch-00-lfs.gz
