  1. Try taking out enough ram to get it down to 64Mb.
  2. when you put both controllers in place, which slots do you use?
  3. If isn't a real hardware problem, I suspect the Compaq BIOS is
	screwing up the PCI config. Does the 
	machine load NT with both controllers in place? Does it pass
	the Adaptec tests (e.g. disk interleave test)? What about a
	FreeBSD or Linux boot disk? 

  Just after biomask is where the root disk is loaded, and also where
interrupts get turned on. Boot with -a, so that it will prompt you for
root. When it prompts, interrupts are already on (I think). 
  Another thing to try is to boot with -d, and type "break mountroot",
followed by 'c'. 

  What about if you hook up an IDE drive, and boot with no SCSI disks
at all plugged in? Do you keep trying with the same SCSI disk?
