So I have had a truly amazing amount of trouble getting i386/NetBSD+X to deal
reasonably with a AGP card. I breifly scanned over the list archives, but
since i couldnt really "search" it - i just skimmed titles and didnt see much
/ anything on subject. If am blind - and repeating a previous discussion,
please just direct me to it.
I've tried this using two X dists:
- XFree86 3.3.2 + XSuSE (XFCom_3DLabs)
- XiG
I get about the same results with both setups. Oh, yeah, XAccel works just
fine with the freebsd emul package -- atleast I have previously never had
problems with running it with several pci cards / laptops. I've also tried
two different cards - An 8meg ELSA ELSA GLoria Synergy and a 8meg Matrox
Mil G200.
With XiG - (only tried it with the G200), X would start, the screen looks
like it starts to go into graphics mode - but never quite makes it, and no
amount of screaming seems to get the console back. (I endup having to login
from a different box and reboot.)
With XSuSE - (only tried it with the ELSA, since thats all they had), X would
sometimes make it all the way into graphics mode. Exactly the first time I ran
X. However, after the first time - if i exited X it would get locked into a
state just as the other had.
Talking around sipb the general impression is that this is "everything" but
netbsd's problem. Regardless of that, I only have this problem with netbsd.
The most common opinion is that it is a irq problem because the agp bus doesnt
communicate what irq it took to the pci bus which happily gives it to an
additional device. On this thread I have heard that "Its a BIOS problem" ,
which it may well be.. but doesnt help me get around it.
Why go with AGP when PCI works fine? because a bunch of annoying wankers in
the pc industry decided that its a good idea to phase out PCI video cards.
After all AGP saves you a PCI slot on most boards. bfd.
So is there anything I can do about this? or do I just have to smile as the
PC industry again decides agaist lube.
