If you do
strings `which gs` | more
/Aladdin
You will hopefully see something like this:
Copyright (C) 1997 Aladdin Enterprises, Menlo Park, CA. All rights reserved.
Aladdin Ghostscript
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.10/doc
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.10:/usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts
which would at least tell you where it's looking for fonts.
