I guess some folks just were not around long enough. So here we go here's more!

After low-lewel scsi formatting nothing changed:

Steps taken :
1.  Low-level SCSI format {{ DOS//A:SCSIFMT }}
2.  Check out geometry with {{ PFDISK 0//L }} It reported :

      # Partition table on device 0
      geometry 1024 64 32  (cyls heads sectors)
      #  ID  First(cyl)  Last(Cyl)  Name    # start, length(sectors)
      1    0              0             0
      2    0              0             0
      3    0              0             0
      4    0              0             0

3. booting from NetBSD 1.3.2 floppy.
     The 1st phase reported my disk geometry (sd0: 2014MB, 6810, 4, 151// 512x4,124,736)
5. after selecting (a) {{ a. Install NetBSD to hard disk }} and (b) {{ Yes }} it hangs with
      {{ o o o
           Shall we continue ?
              sd0(ahb0:0:0) timed out, ... timed out AGAIN
      }}.
6. Only hard boot can get me out.

7. Ran FDISK allocating "entire" disk to DOS
8.  Check out geometry with {{ PFDISK 0//L }} It reported :

      # Partition table on device 0
      geometry 1024 64 32  (cyls heads sectors)
      #  ID  First(cyl)  Last(Cyl)  Name    # start, length(sectors)
      1    6              0       1023   DOSbi  # 32,  2097120
      2    0              0             0
      3    0              0             0
      4    0              0             0

9. Repeat steps #3 thru #6 (with exactly the same results as before //Timed out)
10. Under DOS ran: FDISK (to remove all and recreate DOS primary over "entire" disk).
11. Ran FIPS to get detailed geometry; it reported:
---------------------------------------------------------------------

12.  Using {{ PFDISK 0 }} I reset the {{only partition Type to 165}}
13. Ran {{PFDISK 0; and then FDISK (again just to verify that all parms are still O.K.)
      PFDISK showed correctly:
          # Partition table on device 0
          geometry 1024 64 32  (cyls heads sectors)
          #   ID  First(cyl)  Last(Cyl)  Name    # start, length(sectors)

14. booting from NetBSD 1.3.2 floppy (No time-out message this time !!!)
15. a: Install NetBSD 2 HD ;      b: Yes ((Reporting:
           I found only one disk, sd0...
16. a: OK
    o o o  Cylinders should be <= 63                     <--- Now I (Igor) think here's one problem
    o o o If you have BIOS set up to use > 1024 <--- This is a mystery to me (Igor)

    Real geometry 6810 cyls, 64 heads, 32 secs
    BIOS geometry 2014 cyls, 64 heads, 32 secs

           * a: Reenter geometry
           * b: Continue with install

       o o o Now here I've done various permutations, I'll give you two forced on me by NetBSD install:

17. a: Reenter geometry

    cylinders    2014
    heads             64
    sectors           32

         Install complained :
             Cylinders should be <= 63, if you have the BIOS set up to use > 1024 o o o
             NOTE: if I (Igor) continued (b) instead, install forced me to enter geometry anyway!
                         I have tried to enter only <cr>'s here, but that hasn't worked either.

18. a: Reenter geometry

    cylinders    1024
    heads             63
    sectors           32

19. b: Continue with install

Your SCSI disk has 4124736 total sectors. The following are possible choices for fake geometries. At least the last one is the reported
geometry.

1:   341 C*    32 H*   378 S*  =  4124736 total sectors
2: 3271 C*    12 H*     97 S*  =  4124731 total sectors
3: 1097  C*   16 H*   235 S*  =  4124720 total sectors
4:   599 C*    22 H*   313 S*  =  4124714 total sectors
5: 6810 C*     4 H*    151 S*  =  4113240 total sectors

           ******************
           *       Choose an option
           *  a: Use real ...
           *  b: Use disklabel ...
           *  c: Chose fake geometry
                      NOTE: I (Igor) have tested all, a b, and c options // I'm including only (c) here.

21. 5: ,  b: Yes (exclude last cylinder)
22.  a: Use entire disk;  , a: standard partitions
23.  a. Partitions are OK
24. [mydisk]; , b: Yes (We shall continue)
There were no errors above, except two warnings before supperblock operations, namely,
    {{ Warning 32 sectors in last cylinder unallocated }}, and a bit later
    {{ Warning 572 sectors in last cylinder unallocated }}.
  o o o
  o o o unpack the dist. files. Press <cr> to proceed
25. b:Yes (display files as they are extracted)
26.
      Extracting file /mnt/usr/INSTALL/kern.tgz
      ./netbsd
      sd0(ahb0:0:0) timed out
      panic Should call debugger here (aha1742.c) <<<<< My Controler is AHA1740 !!!
      Solid D E A D only reboot //power off gets me back

I repeated these steps over and over again, and I am now almost sorry I asked for help!
The trouble is I am not sure how much trouble would I have after I buy a new SCSI controller!
   -- Will I get the drivers and config files for the damn EISA config, AHA174x series is no longer avail.
   -- The newer HW usually doesn't come with the EISA config files,
   -- I fear using generic config files and all permutations of parameters due to general VAR's ignorance, and lack of documentation due to HTML
or Adobe packaged e-info, which also is usually worth nothing, except for few nice pictures and fantastic sound effects.

Well, one more night is over, and I'm not sure it was worth it!

Regards, Igor H. Pirnovar
