I ran it that way, as in:

% timidity -ikv ~czyz/Axel_f.mid

and had the same result. That line I tried with all the wacked out
options and redirects was a last attempt.

I have a Gravis Ultrasound rev 2.4, it's 16-bit. I haven't had any
trouble from other sound programs (xaudio, rvplayer, cat *.au > /dev/audio)
